D48 #100WorkingDays Our Housing dilemma

After a while renting in Mill Hill and working in Edgware we began to explore what we could afford in terms of our own place to live. As the 1980s progressed we saw property prices rising and soon most of London was beyond us financially. We had a look around the London area and wondered where we could move and find work.

I attended a nursing job fair held in the Russell Hotel and found people from Milton Keynes advertising the new hospital being built. It piqued my interest as they were suggesting that help with housing would be available. A while later in 1983 we ventured up the M1 on a November day and found a large inflated information centre in the central Milton Keynes area. There we discovered that shared ownership housing was being built and prioritised for teachers and hospital staff.

So MK as we know it became a place to move to, and look for work. Whilst I landed a staff nurse  role at the new hospital Megan found a teaching job. And we began paying a mortgage, alongside the rent that was part of the Shared ownership deal. From our flat we found a house, and one we managed to see being completed. Milton Keynes became the home for us in the early part of 1984.

Still a bit to do when we first saw it
