D49 #100WorkingDays A fresh place to be

It’s 1984 though not the Orwellian scenario; we have a house, garden and work in MK. There was much that was new. First the experience of snagging on a new build. Our new drains were blocked as I soon discovered one evening after a bath. The water was coming up out of the kitchen sink. The following day one of builders sent to investigate found a device for testing the drain had not been removed.
A bit later when trying the heating system water leaked through the downstairs ceiling light. One of the pipes had not been soldered.

Our house was otherwise a joy, and creating the garden an adventure. I decided to make the front lawn of hand sewn grass. It took lots of raking to make the surface right but was well worth it. The back garden needed turf and my calculations of the amount required was faulty. I was able to sell on the surplus to other new neighbours.

Around us are parks and the canal. We could walk to Newport Pagnell high street, and admire passing Aston Martins. We got to meet new neighbours making new friends. Visitors were family and others from afar. The mix of old and new in MK was a source of interest, particularly as places like Bletchley Park were being discovered and developed. New opportunities were there too, the Open University or OU in local language offered study and potential employment. It was an exciting time to be here.
