An enjoyable aspect of domestic life was getting to know the neighbours. In Mill Hill we got to be familiar with those around us. In the house next door was a Welsh family of 3 generations. They included a mechanic who was helpful in getting the subframe of the Mini changed when Megan couldn’t afford main garage prices.
Also there were his Grandma, known as Mam, who was in her 90s. Each day her daughter made her a milk pudding which was left to cool before being served. One day when chatting with her, we discovered our cat had begun to nip in at lunchtime and eat the cooling pudding. They had a cat too, who had never done such a thing! Now what was happening was they made our cat their own dish of pudding.
Another near neighbour was a widow whose late husband had worked in the drinks industry. We discovered one day when we took in a parcel for her was that at Christmas she was given a case of spirits and wine. An invite to drinks there was not easy to refuse.
