D45 #100WorkingDays Moving in

Now married we’re living together in the unfurnished flat Megan had found when looking for a place to live. To encourage teachers to Edgware the council arranged a flat for the first year. Thereafter the teachers had to find somewhere themselves. It led to period of homelessness for Megan until a contact told her about the ground floor flat in Mill Hill. In an old Edwardian house it was cold enough in winter for us to keep milk in the fridge to prevent if freezing.

I’d commute to the hospital while Megan taught in the nearby primary school. We got into the routine of the weekly rubbish collection, care of the garden as well as looking after the cat. He was a great rat catcher. Our neighbour upstairs was not sure about my arrival and didn’t like too much noise. We held a couple of parties and had friends and family visit for meals.

Being located there we had easy access to theatre and cinema, and we could drive through the City of London at weekends to reach south London quickly, all before the completion of the M25, and before security concerns made that route less attractive. It was a busy time and we adapted to my shift work quickly. As time progressed we had to think about career opportunities. As someone who’d hardly ever moved it looked like another move was on the cards.
