Radio has made itself heard in previous blogs so I’ll say a little more here. My dad loved the radio, for the music, the news and the comedy especially. He’d had a crystal set as a boy on which he heard a variety of programmes that fuelled his love of listening and later on exploring music. The Proms became an annual event for him to attend, seeing Sir Henry Wood conduct the orchestra.
As I grew up dad and I would be engaged in activities such a servicing a car, and the radio would be playing. On Saturday mornings in particular the radio shows such as the Goons, and Round the Horne were favourites. At those times dad would show me techniques of woodwork and metalwork, he’d trained as a teacher in those subjects. There was gardening too. Transistor radio made radio portable which helped listening outside. Indoors we had a large EKO radio that had a screen that showed the radio stations we could receive. In time I wanted my own radio as Radio Luxembourg became required pop listening.
But music was a love of dad’s and the variety of music we listened to has helped me to appreciate a wide range of music. He took me to concerts as well as play a range of records. Practical skills, though not as accomplished as dad I have, and the enjoyment of music is a treasured legacy.
