A to Z and stops between

It is the end of October as I publish this piece. As a Freedom to Speak Up Guardian I have been engaging with the National Guardian’s Office campaign for #SpeakUpMonth and #SpeakUpABC via Twitter.

With the help of our communications department I have been able to put up a fresh letter every day except Sundays and today, the 30th October hence this blog.

As a relatively new Guardian I have enjoyed seeing the considerable efforts other Guardians have gone to in order to promote Freedom to Speak Up. It has inspired me to do better next year.

In the meantime I have had important contact with groups at work such as our BAME network, and some management teams to get further engagement and raise the profile of the Guardian role.

Alongside that the growing team of potential Guardians and Champions have been coming up with ideas for supporting the culture of Freedom to Speak Up in our Trust. It makes for an interesting year ahead.

Another speaking engagement this week had me sharing my nursing career story with band 6 leaders from across Trust departments. It was good to be able to share thoughts on leadership and how my life has been shaped since school days, and how I came ‘home’ to nursing. Our Trust strives to be supporting us as we face the work COVID-19 brings, making efforts to listen to staff members and has acted for example, with the opening of the new permanent staff hub this week. The listening that has taken place is important and encourages people to speak up. This is good in October for Speak Up Month. It is in the rest of the year that we need to continue to support all, from A to Z to speak up, and allow them to be heard with respect and gratitude for the courage they show in coming forward.
